About Mrs. Lavette Dunham:

Mrs. Lavette Dunham is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, and is a wife and mother of three adult children. Mrs. Dunham currently serves as assistant principal at the MNPS Virtual School. She excels in building relationships and student engagement and is an exceptional communicator.

Mrs. Dunham earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Business Information Systems at Tennessee State University (TSU) after completing her high school career at Hillsboro Comprehensive High School. Upon graduating from TSU, she embarked on a career in banking until her passion for teaching took her back to her alma mater to earn a Master of Curriculum & Instruction degree while working for the university’s athletics department. Mrs. Dunham worked for six years as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) business teacher at Antioch High School. She also served as a CTE department chair and academy team lead for the Tennessee Teachers Credit Union Academy of Business & Marketing. Then, she transitioned to The Cohn Learning Center as a CTE teacher and was soon assigned several leadership opportunities, including Dean of Students, Principal designee, and School Improvement Team lead. In 2014, she was named the 2014-2015 Teacher of the Year. Her time at The Cohn Learning Center is where she was introduced to the MNPS Virtual School and served as an adjunct business teacher since 2016.
After several years in education and encouragement to build upon her leadership skills, Mrs. Dunham earned an Education Specialist degree from Carson-Newman University. She continued to serve The Cohn Learning Center and demonstrated her leadership capacities as the school’s first Dean of Students. Mrs. Dunham is currently pursuing her doctorate in Administration & Supervision from Carson-Newman.

Mrs. Dunham is a natural servant leader. She is an active member at her church, where she serves as the administrative assistant, choir President, Young Adult advisor, and instructional teacher. In addition, Mrs. Dunham is a member of the Nashville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., secretary for The Thomas Edward Poag Players Guild Affinity Group, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
