Our History
A Legacy of Innovation

Ms. Hill and Mr. Hawk have been part of our school community since its founding.
MNPS Virtual School began as a small virtual learning program serving just 14 full-time students in 2010. Following passage of Tennessee’s Virtual Public Schools Act, it officially opened in August 2011 as the first public virtual school in Tennessee.
From the beginning, the school has been a leader in online education. Enrollment grew quickly, along with opportunities for students to earn credits, take advanced courses and receive personalized academic support. Over the years, Virtual School has earned recognition for student achievement, academic growth and innovation while helping shape virtual learning practices across Tennessee.
When the COVID-19 pandemic transformed education in 2020, Virtual School’s years of experience became a resource for schools across MNPS. Its educators helped teachers and administrators make the rapid transition from in-person to online instruction.
Today, MNPS Virtual School continues to evolve around the needs of its students—combining innovation and flexibility with meaningful relationships and a strong sense of community. What began as a new way to learn has become a place where students are known, supported and encouraged to pursue what’s possible, with love and courage guiding the way forward.
