Former Overton High School and MNPS graduate, Dr. Kelby House Garner, announced as Dean of Instruction at MNPS Virtual School!
As a former John Overton Comprehensive High School graduate, Dr. Kelby House Garner is no stranger to Metro Schools or MNPS Virtual School. Since joining MNPS Virtual School in 2014, Dr. Garner’s inherent leadership abilities and unique relationships with several Metro Schools were ever apparent while serving as School Counselor and Dean of Student Affairs. Recently, Dr. Garner accepted a new role building upon her experience with Virtual School - Dean of Instruction. In this new leadership post, Kelby serves as an instructional leader for high school TNReady subjects, middle school subjects, and Exceptional Education services at Virtual School. Additionally, Kelby is continuing in her previous role of supervising all Virtual School partnerships with other Metro Schools that offer virtual courses on a part-time basis. Executive Principal of Virtual School - Dr. James Vince Witty - shares, “The faculty and staff of Virtual School are excited to welcome a proven leader, Dr. Kelby House Garner, to this new role. Garner’s growth mindset is unmatched and she will continue to move Virtual School and virtual learning forward.”
Upon graduating high school, Dr. Garner enrolled at Tennessee State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. For several years, Garner served as an adult case manager at Mental Health Cooperative. Her caseload consisted of assisting approximately 90 adults with severe and persistent mental illness. After serving at Mental Health Cooperative, Dr. Garner decided to enroll in graduate school to become a professional school counselor. Garner felt that she could serve in a preventative manner by helping students learn coping strategies to help with the ambiguity of life.
More recently, Dr. Kelby House Garner enrolled at Carson-Newman University to expand her knowledge of instruction. Here, Garner studied educational leadership, earning both an Educational Specialist and Doctor of Education Degree. Kelby believes every student can learn and experience success in an online learning environment. Dr. Garner asserts, “As Dean of Instruction, my goal is to ensure that all students have equitable access to high-quality virtual learning experiences.” Dr. Garner also currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at Tennessee State University and Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.
